Double Standards!

Minister Latheef, a lawyer in profession, faces so many criticisms from sports fraternity
Football as it is called in this part of the world is the bloodline of Maldivian sport. No Maldivian will deny that. However, some people who has parachuted themselves to the sporting arena lately are finding it hard to accept this and trying their utmost to change this. But in vain.

Perhaps my statement might come as a surprise to some but for those who are involved daily in sports, especially football will understand what I am trying to say. The latest of these came from the Honorable sports minister on “Manthiri” program showed on DhiTv.  He was very sure that an MP cannot run FAM efficiently. When the host even stated that throughout the world there are lot politicians successfully running sport organizations, he retorted saying there are countries where there has been no success in this partnership. I am not disagreeing with him nor agreeing with him. My point here is that we take examples from international best practice and read success stories to develop our small country. Just because the person running the organization is from opposition does not call to always draw examples from negative cases, while he himself being the sports minister is acting and behaving in similar fashion. Time and again, the sports minister and his colleagues, seems to forget, or rather does it purposely, and points out that sports should be free of politics.  But the big question is that, just because you are from a political party, does it constitute that you are polluting your sport with politics. If that is so, why on earth is the sports minister daily and constantly involving himself in the daily matters of other sports organization in the country?  This was very evident in the last elections of Maldives Olympic Committee. Football Association was denied a seat on the executive committee of MOC, by the direct intervention of the sports minister. Instead they opted for Handball, a sport which most of us even don’t know and not played in Maldives. Denying the sporting bloodline a say in the Olympic Movement, just because the representative is from the opposition. Isn’t that mixing politics with sports? Or does it only happen for certain people? Isn’t this double standards?

The next message the minister gave on this program in response to the question of finance was that currently the sports ministry is giving less financial assistance to FAM, but doing more in other areas like building sports fields, leveling ground and providing equipments like goal posts and providing opportunities for training. For the naïve this might sound very appealing. But the fact of the matter is that in the past all these things the minister pointed out was done by the sports ministry in addition to providing high level of financial assistance. So, how can the minister now claim that they are doing more? It’s absurd! It is unprofessional and unethical to claim that FAM and the elected staff are not doing enough to develop football. Once again, this shows that the minister does not clearly understand the set up of sports organization in the world and their best practice. When you look across the globe, from the largest international sports organization to small national organizations, the elected people are volunteers who provide their vision and guidance to the development of the sport and the organization. The day to day running and management of such organizations are done by administrative staffs that are paid. This is a fact! But he fails to see this, perhaps maybe due to the double standard he applies in the case of FAM.

When the new sports minister came in, the tone was to make the associations more independent. The constant message gave a new lifeline to the sports administrators to excel themselves and prove their worth and service to the country. But not long after the statement was made, the real action changed totally opposite. The current practice seem more centralized, which takes us back to the days of Sports Division, in the Ministry of Home Affairs, from where all sporting works were done.  This action is once again very evident from the current practice of the ministry regarding the South Asian Games. Now and then, his colleagues come on TV and Radio and claims, this time things are different. The government is doing more work and organization for the teams participating in the games. The question is what is the difference? The only difference is that everything was done centrally, under the direct supervision of the minister and his favourite colleagues. Even, the work of the Olympic Committee was hijacked and performed by him. Once again this is totally against the Olympic Movement and the Olympic Charter. But who cares eh!

Let’s look at the steps the so called organizing committee, which had three brothers, did differently. In previous years, the finance to participate in the games, were provided to the associations in their budget. All preparations were done the individual associations. This time, the associations had to come begging many times to get the funds, ensuring that the ministry had control over them. As always, ministry provided the gear for the teams. The difference is that, this time teams did not get their gear when they left the country for the games. That is different! There was also another aspect of it where they did a technical evaluation. I cannot judge whether it was right or wrong, but as far as I know it created a lot of problems to many athletes and coaches and had the stigma of self promotion of those involved in the team. I do admit there was a positive where the teams were provided food. Furthermore teams left for Hulhule from the main jetty on a dhoni.

I also believe that the sports ministry has a role in the development of sports within the country. But, while the minister is a politician, as he rightly said, he should show professionalism, create harmony and be just in providing services and making comments. I am no fan of FAM or Azim, but I believe, each and everyone should be treated equally without bias and show leadership and character when you are the sports minister. Measure from the same measuring cylinder using the same units. Only compare similar things, not apples and oranges, oranges and oranges. Please refrain from the double standards that you are being practiced in the sports ministry today. May GOD save our football and sports in general? Inshaa Allah!

It's interesting to see how people react to the same thing. And it is so easy to do the same things differently. I just want to make a comment to the comment made by Niaz, who does not seem to see what happened in the past. Please go back and check history, where you will find that all teams did have training abroad before they went to the games. As far as 1999. This year the limelight has come cos everything was done centrally and for the benefit of some people it was made public. So in essence, nothing changed as before, just the way it was done. So before commenting, get your facts right. Enjoy!

Ministry is doing hard work to develop the sports in this country even the huge financial difficulties due to economic downtown. FAM is always blaming Ministry for their failure. Azim is selfish politician ruining our beautiful game. Look at the attendance of the league match played in last year. Who will take the responsibility of loosing support in the loca football in Maldives. So this is biased article. Write something useful to develop our football.

This is the best year for Maldives sports. It is evident from the results. Football team, volley team and basketball team are doing so well, all the thanks to the wonderful preparations facilitated in Male' and abroad by the sports ministry.

Ihave got nothing against this government, but i hate to say that this Minister has failed terribly. This will be the worst 5 years for Maldives sports

Azim has destroyed our beloved game of football. As in a previous comment, it would have been very professional if Kaleem was elected FAM president. Still there is time to make Maldives football better. Get rid of Azim.

What a bunch of lies from the writer. You don't see the difference in the preparation to the South Asian Games this time? You must be a real big liar to say what you have said. All teams went abroad this time to get training and experience which wasn't the case in any previous games. Food and so many programs were arranged by the government for all the athletes even during their stay in Maldives. it is a pity you dont see the difference. It;s not a surprise that you defend your master, Azim. How much did he give you guys? I wonder. Shame on MS

its seems the writer doesnt know what he is writing. too many times you have said "i donno if it is right or wrong". To criticize you should know your facts. Its too watery. All I know the largest contingent ever to participate in SA Games from Maldives has gone to Dhakha this time. I salute the sports minister for taking the initiative to raise funds even when there was nothing in the govt coffers to support the games. If not for his efforts i wonder whether there would be a Maldives contingent for this games. Furthermore I think it is an absolute lie to say that the mandate of the olympic committee was hijacked. It is very clear from the interview given by bodey (chairman of olympic committee) prior to his departue that he has never before seen this kind of committment and support from the sports ministry before. Welldone Hassan Latheef.

I wouldnt even call it double standards. This is bull@$#^. The minister has destroyed the passion for sports in this country. He is not capable of such a position. It is no political rivalry. I call MS to get the figures, how much the govt has put in for football in the past 10 years. A graph would be nice. I think you have to be political to say anything these days. I remember last year Hamid saying how much money the country spent to bring a trophy back home. Dosent he see the other priceless things we got. It got the whole country together. I call the minister to resign immediately. i think even he knows he cant do it.

FAM cannot be happy with the Ministry since its under the Ruling party. FAM is under an opposition politician. There is no way that FAM and the Sports Ministry can get along. Political rivalry will continue. And its being used through sports. The blame game will continue. Its the athletes and the sport who have to pay the price. Way to go Azim and Latheef. How good it would have been if Kaleem had been FAM president. (We all remember how Azim became president while his friends were in power, don't we)

Ugh! It's going round in circles all over again. Here's my point of view, it might not be palatable to all, but then i don't mind it at all. Football cannot be divorced from politics in the Maldives. (come to think of it what can be?) I say this because the people in the EXCO are mostly sleepy politicians as most of them have contested for the parliament. My guess is it was then fashionable to be associated with politics, not that they had any chance of winning an election! The Ministry is the biggest sponsor of FAM, so if the ministry is involved its gotta be politics. FAM is supposed to be "musthagillu" or whatever that might mean. In reality it is a cripple, simply because it's soul depends on the sizeable handouts from the government. OK i can hear you guys screaming now... hang on for a minute...lets see the facts....It's almost two years since we are claiming the FAM to be "independant". At the end of last year FAM OWES MONEY TO THE CLUBS!.. wow!! i guess this is the first time!! The clubs were all practicing on half a turf for the whole year, no wonder we do not improve. The lights have been installed over three years and god knows when it is going to be lit. The sponsors are holding back the money cos some of the requirements were not fulfilled...The biggest bribery case involving betting has dragged on for almost a year with no end in sight! No blue print of maldivian football has existed and no one in the FAM has the desire to do it. FAM has been virtually kicked out of VISION ASIA, (haven't seen any reports on it on the sleepy media so far, hope the media can wake up now) so there would be no handouts from AFC.... (rumour has it FAM is on a collision course with the AFC supremo!)...So if i were an EXCO member, my resignation would have been on the table on 31 Dec 2009. That would have been my route, but the EXCO members have got to protect their EGOs so they take the easy route and blame it all on the Ministry!

No surprise MS is getting so dirty and destroying our beloved game of sport. What else can one expect when MS is the mouthpiece of Azim
[ Mode ] posted on: 27 Jan 2010
I agree with Adam's comment. The minister's action looks more like personal than sports or politics. I really wonder then how he can see an unbiased future for sports or youth for that matter. Rivalry is something else, but when it becomes personal, then things need to be changed. We need to change the minister!
[ Jeeko ] posted on: 27 Jan 2010
we could all blame this on the govt. i believe we didn't get gold this time, because of govt. they just have to lower the moral of players just before the final. announcing govt will not give bonus but they will raise donation from poor ppl living in maldives.

one wonders how far mr. latheef is going to take this whole episode to.. looks like he's got personal stuff to sort out with azim..nothing political nothing sports related!

Congratulations to the minister! He has served his purpose. Since lately there has been no exchange from FAM regarding his actions, he has gone on the show and done this. We all know who the host is, close buddy of he minister. The guy who was deeply involved in the so infamous "bidheyseen registration program". So we can see where it came from. I have to applaud the minister for being so cunning. At the same time I also applaud the courage shown by the writer. More people like this should come out express their frustration. After all we are here to serve the nation and the people.

Nice Title! A true picture of the current sports minister. History tells us that he always do that. Have a two faced approach to everything he does. I know him very well. I had the pleasure of being with him during his study time. Oh! God how much he has changed. So I am not surprised. I am just amazed how he is surviving while he is making blunder after blunder in his ministry! Doesn't anyone in the government cares! Or are they sleeping! If so I call sports clubs to wake up and walk the talk.

I think MS is making this into politics. BTW who is this MOHAMED RIYAZ. I saw last nights "Manthiri" show. In that show minister make a comment about the president of Volleyball Association MOHAMED RIYAZ. If this writer is the same. I blame MS also for making this show into a POLITICAL agenda. I call MS not to mix politics an sports.
[ AHMED ] posted on: 26 Jan 2010
There are some good points in the article. Like "Bollocks" commented, it can also be confusing to some. But I guess what the writer is trying to say is that what the English proverb says, "Teach what you preach". While the minister mix politics in sport, why does he go and accuse others of doing that and blame them for it. The fact of the matter is that, in Maldives, the minister has to lead by example. I hope he knows that!
[ Ismail ] posted on: 26 Jan 2010
A daring article, needless to say!. As a person involved daily in the administration of a sport organisation, I congratulate the writer for being so direct and specific. While I agree that we were faced with so much unnecessary difficulties in 2009, for the sake of my sport, I cannot come out and speak against it. Imagine what will be done to us, when they can do so much to football. I hope more people will voice their genuine concerns and try and rectify the situation quickly. I hope the President also reads this article. MS please provide more of this. Thank you very much.

Boanganvilla beyfulhun ge ministry e thee.. Writer is sayin truth. I totally agree. What we saw from SAFF CHmps also it was only BOANGANVILLA BOYS who are infrontline. We didnt see HANIM.. Y. Caz he z a DRP member. We didnt see MAHID.. Y He was so close to the former Ministers which they mean that he also is a DRP member. We only see HASSAN ISMAIL, AHMED ISMAIL, or those kind of unfamiliar faces. This is actually POLICTICS. AZIM being a MP is not the only POLITICS we see here.. It seems that these BOANGANVILLA BOYS are trying to move-back football to 10 years back thinking that they could bring up BASKETABLL into the top sport of this country. BUT BOYS it wont happen. Eventhougt FAM is not there still football will be the no1 sport in this country.

After reading the article i was not sure what the writer was trying to say! The Editorial board of MS should step in and make this more coherent for the readers! If the author wants to have a go at the Minister of anyone else then make it more readable please!
