Afghanistan players responded in style to Urbanyi's
Dhaka, BANGLADESH – Maldives grabbed another disaster in regional football after they slumped to a 1-0 defeat in the hands of the so called minnows Afghanistan. Maldives dominated the first half of the game and created chances after chances to score but the poor finishing cost them heavily and it was a surprise to see deadly striker Ashfaq was given a more midfield role.

Before the game Maldives coach Urbanyi sent a strong message to Afghanistan saying “Stop Us” and they replied to it perfectly.

In the 3rd minute Ashfaq supplied a good low cross to Nafiu but he failed to kick it properly and sent the ball wide from close range.

Best chance of the game came in the 16th minute. Nafiu picked a through ball and only the keeper to beat he shot the ball wide.

In the dying minutes of the half, Akram supplied a cross from left wing but the ball was cleared by Afghanistan defenders.

Afghanistan came stronger in the second half and Maldives failed to continue the type of game they enjoyed in the first half.

In the 71st minute Afghanistan got their first chance of the game but the close range shot was well saved by keeper Faisal.

In the next minute on a counter attack Afghanistan broke the dead lock.

Tension from the players rose as the game reaches the end. Ismail Easa and Hussain Latheef were given the marching orders before Afghanistan skipper being sent off for a foul on Mukhthar Naseer in the extra period of the game.

After the game, Maldivian journalists had a tough time finding coach Urbanyi for a comment.

well, i watched the match from the beginning till end, Maldives performed well in the first half but it turned frm the second half. to be honest afghan didn't play well, it was just lack of experience from defense line. keeper should not act tooo hurry to throw the ball when nil from both the team, urbani has worked very hard and very well. i appreciate his hard work, he tried all the way he can, as he wants players to play same rhythm what he wanna see on the pitch, but i believe it will take few years to adapt coach's game style, still maldivian players needs lot more improvement on ball controlling and penalty shoot out. FAM can do lot more to improve players, as napal football president has decided their senior players to play in European league and they helping to find chances to players frm clubs. i think same way FAM can at least find some opportunity to players who wants to play in European league, otherwise football style in the maldives will never be better, try to find opportunities to ashfaaq, oppo, umair, 2kilo and so on players to show their skills out side the country and let them bring more skills and tallant. wish all the best to all foootball players in the maldives. good luck for next season

next time lets try to be on the ground when we do it. it doesnt mean that we are the kings after winning just one time. but kings are who defend it all the times. eventhough i am a maldivian i am sorry to say that we maldivians are very slef proud ppl. when ever we go to semi finals its like we have won the tournments. i think we shoud stop this. and also the players should play for the pride of the nation not for the bonus they get. if we can change all that we can be forever kings.
